Life Goes By And I Can’t Keep Up Oh life goes by every single day And I can’t keep up Oh na-na-na We’re almost back home from the weekend I wish we could keep driving ‘Cause tomorrow I’ll be waking up to my problems ooh ooh Day dream at work, the smell of smoke on my sweater Oh life goes by every single day And I can’t keep up Oh na-na-na The years go by and I’m stumbling oh I don’t know where all the time’s gone And I tell you that in my heart I feel like I just left high school Stuck paying bills, searching for love, feel like I’m losing Oh life goes by every single day And I can’t keep up Oh na-na-na Never forget when the news came in Tears flowed down like rivers Interrupted by how permanent this life is When I’m hurting, the world gets smaller and smaller All this time Year after year The lessons I’ve learned have brought me to tears The meaningless work The traffic and cars The movies I’ve watched The drinks in the bars Oh life goes by every single day And I can’t keep up Oh na-na-na

about

“A couple years ago we were in Toronto and spent time writing with Brendan Canning of Broken Social Scene. The melody and idea for Life Goes By and I Can’t Keep Up came from that session,” said Danielle about the song’s origin.

“A common thread throughout a lot of our new music was this idea of revisiting our roots and what first brought us together to make music,” said Drew. "Danielle and I were both in more indie and singer-songwriter projects when we first met, and actually some of the first songs we wrote as Dear Rouge were acoustic ballads. We wanted to find a way to bring that organic beginning to where we are now.”

“I don’t think we need to say much more about this song,” added Danielle. “It really speaks for itself. When we recorded the vocals for it, I actually cried in the booth. That catharsis and vulnerability is palpable, and I hope listeners resonate with it too.”
